HMSS Mission
The Hellenic Mass Spectrometry Society (HMSS) is an exclusively non-profit entity in it scope and mission. Its principle objectives is to enhance and support the utilization of mass spectrometry (MS) as a discipline for basic and applied research including, but not limited to, analytical chemistry, biomedical studies and biotechnology (analysis of peptides/proteins, sugars, oligonucleotides, fatty acids, etc.), the exploitation of natural products and synthesized species in the discovery and development of pharmaceutical agents, food chemistry, environmental chemistry, clinical chemistry and the characterization and extension of ionization techniques and instrumental platforms, etc.
An additional scope is the transfer and dissemination of MS technologies to research institutes in Greece along with training those scientists desiring to expand their MS knowledge base through workshops, demonstrations, lectures, dedicated conferences and laboratory apprenticeships. Also, the society assists
scientists to find and participate in research programs in the areas of expertise described in paragraph one (1) of the HMSS constitution along with associated scientific disciplines that are funded from national and private funding sources and International agencies. Furthermore, the society supports the collaboration between national and international institutes and organizations with the participation of Greek and non-Greek scientists. Also, the society organizes educational seminars and conferences with the participation of Greek and non-Greek scientists, undergraduate and graduate students towards the effective promotion of the HMSS’s scopes and mission, or any other activity that supports directly or indirectly research progress in analytical chemistry, biology, pharmaceutical and medicinal science, food chemistry and environmental conservation. Encompassed in the society’s basic scope, are fund raising efforts that will support its activities as stated above.
Research
The strengthening and promotion of basic and applied research in the fields of Mass Spectrometry, such as Analytical Chemistry, Biomedical Research and Biotechnology (Analysis of Protein Molecules, DNA, etc.), Utilization of Natural Products and Synthetic Compounds in Drug Discovery and Development, Food Chemistry, Environmental Research, Clinical Chemistry and Investigation of Ionization Mechanisms – Organology, etc.
Institutions
The transfer and dissemination of Mass Spectrometry technologies to research institutions in Greece and the training of scientists who wish to expand their knowledge in the field of Mass Spectrometry through seminars, conferences and practical training.
Participation
Finding and participating in research programs in the areas mentioned in paragraph 1 and related sciences funded by National Public Bodies, private individuals and International Organizations.
Collaboration
The collaboration with other corresponding Greek, World and International Institutions and Organizations, with the participation of Greek and foreign scientists. Also, the organization of educational seminars and conferences with the participation of Greek and foreign undergraduate and postgraduate students with the aim of effectively promoting its objectives.
Other Activities
Any other activity that may directly or indirectly promote research in analytical chemistry, biology, pharmaceutical and medical science, food chemistry and environmental conservation. These activities include those that have as their direct purpose the raising of resources for the success of its aforementioned purposes.
